ABOUT BROADLEAS

Thirty years ago Broadleas was an area of rough moorland with two wooden bungalows, adjacent to a property owned by Leonard Turner - an Exeter businessman and Boys' Brigade Officer.

With great vision he saw the opportunity of creating a place where young people could be challenged and trained; where the skills of living and working together could be learned; where individual character could be moulded and leadership skills developed.

Over the years there has been a steady programme of improvements to the site, the latest being the new kitchen installed for the indoor accommodation and the Activities Unit and Slide Wire on the main field.

The Centre is situated close to Haytor Rocks on the eastern fringe of Dartmoor, approximately mid-way between Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Bovey Tracey.

Broadleas consists of some 5½ acres of woodland, meadows and scrub about 1500 feet above sea level and within the Dartmoor National Park. A great deal of voluntary labour has opened three distinct areas for camping and training.

Since its inception as a Training Centre, young people of all ages have had the opportunity to discover the joys of camping, whether it be Indoor Accommodation or under Canvas.

Broadleas continues to be enjoyed by thousands of young people from the Boys' Brigade, other youth organisations and schools every year.
